Is there something I could have done to make the above video less jerky?

I would suggest keeping the camera more steady. Mount it on a tripod, and if you must move around, carry it on the tripod and practice moving smoothly. You might try extending one of the legs out 90 degrees, holding it with one hand, and holding the main bulk of the tripod with the other. Of course, that makes it difficult to control the camera, so you'll probably want to try various methods and find what works best for you.
24p is challenging to work with. Treating it as video doesn't work very well. It should be treated like film, with smooth camera motion, or none at all.

Agreed. I don't shoot without a tripod with a *fluid* head at all anymore.

That's what I thought. So if I move fluidly and I lock the shutter speed at 1/48 I'll get rid of the strobe look?

Can you recommend a model?

I went intending to buy the Manfrotto 501HDV but ended up with the 701RC2. It was cheaper but still gave me the amount of smoothness I was looking for. Footage confirms that the pans and tilts are very smooth.

I'll second the 701RC2. Very smooth for such a small head. Pretty much a perfect fit for the HV20.
