Hello HV20 Users,

I have a query regarding "portable" miniDV cassette players which can be used with the HV20.

I am interested in purchasing such a player and I have already done a google search in this regard but didn't find out much. It seems there are presently two portable miniDV cassette players (Sony GV-D1000 and JVC CV-VH1) on the market but both have drawbacks which may make them useless for the Canon HV20. The Sony gadget, though price-wise OK, does not appear to be HD compatible and the much more expensive JVC gadget evidently cannot play back 24p footage.

Does anyone know of a portable miniDv cassette player which can play back all kinds of footage (HD, 24p, Standard etc.)? Or some soon to be released gadget? Or some other solution?

Thanks,

Aurangzeb

You would need an HD MiniDV playback player. A very unlikely candidate. If you purchased a standard DV player it would not be able to read, render, or properly play your HV20 content.

I'm looking a HDV tape playback device to capture HDV tapes without wearing out the HV20. I'm thinking of getting a HV10. I saw it in TigerDirect there is a refurbished HV10 for $450.

Sony makes an outlandishly expensive HDV deck, but I'm pretty sure the tape drive in the stupid thing is exactly the same as in their camcorders! I think Taky's solution is what most people are doing: buying a cheap HDV 'consumer' cam to act as a feeder deck for their NLE. (I wonder how many HV20s were bought for that purpose?)

Thanks to you all for your interesting input!

In the meantime, Sony have announced a portable HD Walkman, the GV-HD700E, which is being sold in Europe from September and which will be quite useful as an HV20 accessory I think. Remains to be seen though if it can play back footage recorded in NTSC and also 24p. This was not clear from the announcement.

there is no 24p recorded onto tape. nor 25p.

get yourself a canon HR10 which actually records 25p and forget about minidv players (at least it seems it records 25p directly :D).
