View Full Version : Mixing HV20 and GL2

I'm helping a friend film a wedding on Saturday and she will be using a GL2. I of course will have my HV20. My question is, what mode do you recommend on each to get the best combination for integrating when editing. Would it be wise to use HDV24p or maybe HVD on my HV20. Heck, I don't know if shooting in HD at all would be good to combine the both, but then if my final output is gonna be SD anyways.... Thanks for your help!

I shot a little baby announcement video half GL2 and half HV20. I put the HV20 24p stuff into its own timeline and edited it by itself. after it was the way I wanted it, I just copied it into the timeline of the GL2 stuff. I exported the whole thing as HD and at 24p. The final product was for the web so once it was downsized, it all worked out. I used Final Cut and I unfortunately don't have an exact science when I edit things. This is how it all turned out:

That's my current setup two GL2s and one HV20. I have the GL2 set to "frame mode" so it looks movies like (kinda like the 24p mode in HV20). HV20 set to 24p and P mode but not Cine mode.
Since HV20 is HD and your final output will be downsize to SD, I have Digital Zoom on to 40x. It's another best thing about using HV20 in SD production.
Scroll down to this thread to see two side by side comparison of a frame capture (then resized) between GL2 and HV20

tkmslee,
Oh my god! that was such a lovely video. Congrats on the new baby. The video is really fun to watch. I did laugh out loud when I see "Madison - Drama Queen"
btw I checked the mov file it is in 30fps.
Did you shoot the hospital birth scene using GL2?

This is some awesome info and will help a lot thanks! The HV20 looks so much better (in the wedding stills), but of course cuz of the HD, does the HDV down converted to SD look better still, or pretty close to the GL2? Oh and great video tkmslee, I really love the editing and way you put this together!

Taky,
Thanks. Ya know, it seems like no matter what I do, the final mov file turns out to be 30fps, which I guess is close enough, but even though I deinterlace the HV20 stuff and output it to 24fps, it always ends up 30p.
Yes the hospital scene was shot with the GL2. Everything from the rocking chair scene and on is the HV20.
I actually got my first client job with the HV20. I took it out to shoot some video for a baby video announcement like the one I did for our new baby. I was brave enough to whip out my DIY 35mm adapter even. Hope it turns out well.

If my final output is HDV, I wouldn't have digital zoom on. However, since my target output is DV (downsize from HDV), I have enough resolution to to size down, I have digital zoom on. Still, it doesn't mean I shoot the whole time zooming max at 40x.

Really outstanding, tkmslee!
(I find it hard to believe the person who shot and edited that would worry about suffering from a lack of creativity ...)
