View Full Version : Panasonics New "Live MOS technology"

I'm not sure if this was mentioned here before or not but....I just want to bring to your attention a discussion that was going on over at DVXuser.com about panasonics new sensor technology. The technology itself (NMOS) is not necessarily new but it is speculated that panasonic might be using it in their new 3MOS consumer cam coming up in July. Not only in that cam....but also the DVX replacement cam (HG150...I think it's called). Anyways...I did not realize that CMOS is only one type of "MOS" technology....but the other, NMOS....is not as widely used and it uses....get this...."Global Shutter." NMOS is better than CMOS in all respects and is said to have the best qualities of CCD and CMOS. Better dynamis range...and most importantly....much better in low light. I guess CMOS is not MOS. This is a quote from the User at DVX:
MOS isn't CMOS,
MOS: NMOS and PMOS
CMOS: C means complementary, NMOS+PMOS
Here the panny's MOS is NMOS_only type
It has higher fill factor, bigger sensor area, so it has high sensibility and will improve the PQ. should be more advantage for the pixel shift technology
It's more intelligent, by multiple exposure it can shoot against the light and keep all the things exposing accurately at the same time.
It's global shutter!!!
Panny called it vmaicovicon technology, used in panny's cellphone several years ago and the 4/3 DSLR of Olympus and Panny use MOS as the sensor, called "LIVE MOS"
google "NMOS only", there is a PDF file talking about how nmos-only global shutter works.
Here (http://www.dcviews.com/press/Olympus-Panasonic-MOS.htm) is a direct link to the dcviews.com explanation of panasonic's Live MOS" sensor. It is short but interesting. And Here (http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=138562&highlight=hv20&page=6) is a link to the discussion going on over at DVXuser.com. I think this is pretty cool and thought you all might want to give your opinion on this.

Cool, thanks for posting.
I'm interested to see if it addresses the rolling shutter issue.

Ian,
I'll bet you a beer the "3MOS" cams coming in July are CMOS, complete with rolling (not global) shutter. Deal?

3 rolling shutters??

Where ya been? 3 CMOS is old hat (http://www.abelcine.com/store/product.php?productid=1000401&cat=329&gclid=CP6_u8b-kJQCFSUaagodZiP3tg).

Not 3MOS, but NMOS. Not SD100/HS100, but HMC150. The HMC150 will be the coolest prosumer cam ever. If I actually was shooting something... anything... or just had extra $4500, I would want that one. Tapeless, two card slots, 24Mbit/s, now they say global shutter, it is a dream come true. I wonder what is Canon doing? Where is HD replacement for the GL2? Where is a tapeless version for the A1?

??
The information on this camera is still a little sketchy (it was almost a no-show at NAB), but according to DV Magazine (which awarded the thing a "Black Diamond Award" best of NAB) it has 3 CCDs, and its max data rate is 13Mbps.

:hv20-smilie71:Ha...ha...if only I were a bettin man...but...chances are....you just might be right..... I'll pass...lol:hv20-smilie81:

I believe that its max data rate will be 24 mbps. It won't be the coolest ever, but I've heard that its price may be around $3500, which makes it very intriguing. But the price is still speculation.

ill wait for reviews of the cam hopefully in july... hopefully their claims aren't just marketing BS

You are talking about SH100, not the HMC150? Here is a picture with pretty shallow DOF:

On the other hand I understand that this is full zoom and the background is far away:

If only the sensors were larger... I like how this camera looks, and the auto/manual focus switch on the barrel is a nice touch with pro-like feel.
Panasonic claims 2 lux sensitivity at 1/30 shutter, this is at lest 2 times more sensitive than the SD1 that has 1/4-inch sensors. Maybe even 4 times more sensitive. The SD1 also has 2 lux sensitivity, but in MagicPix mode, that is Auto slow shutter mode when shutter can drop to 1/15 or even 1/8. At the same time, the SD1 is more sensitive than the HF100/10, and I guess is about as sensitive as the HV20, maybe a bit less. I mean real sensitivity with 0 gain. I tested the HF100 and the SD1, and at 0 gain the SD1 is more sensitive.
All in all, the SH100 will be a very interesting camera.

hmc150 would be no doubt sensitive in low light. if it costs 4500, i would rather have the hpx170

.... The SD1 also has 2 lux sensitivity, but in MagicPix mode, that is Auto slow shutter mode when shutter can drop to 1/15 or even 1/8. ......Panasonic's magic pix function is useless. You can maybe use it for more like a special effect...but...it's really useless for motion.
