So I have a step up ring currently on my HV20 that is 43mm to (If i remember correctly) 52mm. I bought the step up ring because at the time I needed quick solution to a cheapo-uv filter I bought when I first took the camera out to use.

Question is as follows.

Now that I'm ready to purchase a legit UV and polorizing filter, would it be in my best interest to just keep the step up ring on and get 52mm filters, or for cameras is the best practice to keep the filter as close to the lens as possible -- and therefore getting 43mm filters?

Thanks!!:hv20-smilie110:

The short answer is you will be severely starved for choice if you choose to stay with 43mm, since it's a pretty odd size.

The widest range of choices would be available in "square" filters for use in a matte box, which have the additional advantage of fitting many different cameras and lenses, but they ain't cheap.

AFAIK, there's no disadvantage from using step-UP rings to fit a filter (assuming you could find something smaller than 43mm, stepping DOWN might present problems).

Nothing specifically to do with what you asked, but this (http://www.singh-ray.com/varind.html) is a screw-on filter that I covet ...
