Dubbing DV > HDV . I'm trying to dub all my master Mini-DV tapes via my Sony GV-D900 (Firewire) deck onto my HV20 into HD format. Is this going to be possible? If so, any quick set-up tips? I scream if this is in the manual:hv20-smilie81:

I doubt it. I would suspect that you would need to put the HV20 in SD mode. If I wasn't interested in reading the book, which I don't blame you, I'm a typical guy that doesn't like to look at books either. Trial and error is the one of the best teachers for an A.D.D guy lie me. If it doens't seem to want to dub SD to HD why don't you try locking or setting the HV20 to SD and see what happens. Than tell us.

Based on a careful read of the manual and trials of last night, I cannot find a way to dub up from SDV via firewire to the HV20 set up in HD.Acording to the manual, the two 'decks' have to be set up in the same format, thus only SDV > SDV or HDV>HDV will work. That's a huge disappointment to me since the sales person that sold me the camera claimed that I could simultaneously shoot HDV on the HV20 while a signal was being passed out via the firewire port to a SDV deck. Oh well! shows you how much sales people really know.

zephyr,
With all due respect, you and the sales person were talking about two different things: as far as I know, the camera might be able to output "live" SD via firewire while recording HDV (don't know, and won't be able to try until I get my paws on the camera), but asking it to up-convert incoming SD material to HD "on-the-fly" over that same connection is different.
There are software programs which claim to be able to "uprezz" SD material to "almost-HD," but I'm pretty sure they all require rendering, and don't manage to operate anywhere near "in real time".

I second what Erik said - you're talking about 2 different things.
You can down-convert from HD footage shot with the HV20 to SD footage when you capture for sure (it's a setting inside the camera).
I have not tried to capture while recording, but it probably will work.
Up-converting from SD to HD is a whole 'nother ball of wax. Not really possible as far as I know.

Ok
Yes I understand now.
So if this is true....
"You can down-convert from HD footage shot with the HV20 to SD footage when you capture for sure (it's a setting inside the camera). "
Can this down-conversion be accomplished even as HD is being recorded onto the HV20's tape. In otherwords, is it possible to record in HD on the camera, while down-converting SD to a VTR (Sony GV-D900) AT THE SAME TIME ? Let me know if used the wrong terms here!

Check out pg. 71 of the manual. It would appear that you could record on the HV20 in HDV format, then later output a standard DV signal through the HDV/DV connector to an external device. Whether you can do this in real-time, it doesn't say, the manual refers to playing back from the camera. You will need to tell the camera to lock the output to DV (not HDV or AUTO) in the menu. Give it a try and let us know.
