My hv20's audio recently went kaput. It's only a month old, and yet the mic's picking up nothing at all. I had a mic pluged into the mic jack, and it kept falling out, and I kept pushing it in, but could that cause it? Any fixes? Please help!

It is possible that that connection is causing it, yes. Not sure, but it could be that the connector has a switch in it (a common version of that 3.5mm connector), and that there's something broken in there, and now making contact so that the HV20 thinks it has an external mic plugged in all the time, at which point it wouldn't record from the internal mics of course.

Probably best to send it in for repair...

Maybe try resetting the camera (little switch-type thing located behind the battery).

I use the mic jack without any problems. BUT I have had 1/8" male connectors that would not seat correctly in the jack and it was a problem with the length (being a bit short) on the male connector and wasn't making a good contact on the tapered tip which is design to hold it in place.

It could be that the mic jack is in an "open" state for external mic use and if the jack is damaged this way the internal mic will not work. But if your internal mic or jack has a problem I would get it check out.

A side note:
Canon sells the DM-50 (pg:61 HV20 manual) that uses the "hot" shoe for cordless mic operation.
