This is a fairly inexpensive and neat light that uses 16 fluorescent CFL bulbs:
http://www.fotodiox.com/shop/product_info.php?cPath=71&products_id=4123
The fixture is $135, which does not include any bulbs.
The maximum rating of each bulb is 30 W, but be careful the fixture is quite small, and the maximum diameter of each bulb can only be slightly over 2 inches.
To make this a really nice light, you can choose daylight balanced bulbs, for instance, from Fullspectrumsolutions (http://www.fullspectrumsolutions.com/compact_fluorescent_32_ctg.htm) or Sunwave (http://www.sunalite.com/s_lightbulbs.cfm) (both those sell HIGH CRI CFLs). The ones from FullSPectrumSolutions can be had for $10 each for the 26 W, and they have a very high CRI value of ~95.

FotoDiox sells on eBay, and that 16 x fixture can be bought with a soft box and light stand for $200. Add $160 for bulbs, and you have a $360 light that is amazingly bright and daylight balanced. Certainly a great light for video production.
I will post images soon...

I'm very intrigued by this light... this is exactly why I got those german sockets (of which you have some)... it was to build lights just like this.

I'm looking forward to these images if you bought one!

Yep, I've got TWO now. You know of the FullSpectrum woes I had/ am having, so right now, I'd have enough CFLs to outfit one of these lights with BlueMax and the other with Paralites.
But I'm telling you, them German sockets are a MILE better than what comes with the light. So, of course, I'm thinking opening one up and replacing all the sockets.:hv20-smilie70:

mal, i am intrigued by these lights as well. I am curious how much light they put out compared to a Lowell DP 500 watt with softbox. Are you still liking these fotodiox lights? They are so cheap!

nevermind, they use UPS standard to ship to Canada, that's a $50 brokerage fee on my side (not to mention taxes, import duties, etc).

Before reading this thread I actually had the same idea, But I plan to mount 4 light sockets to a light 12 inch by 12 inch piece of ply wood and running the wiring tru the back. Then add 4 100watt cfl lights and im set. :hv20-smilie70:
