View Full Version : Intentional Vignetting

Mal requested that I publish a file that can be used for intentional vignetting. I usually use a Nattress plug in and tweak it so I get vignetting just on the corners. But I have heard of some people using a plain old photoshop file as an overlay over their video. So here are both the psd and the png that you can download and use to try this effect. Right click and save as these files:

I never thought it would come in handy, or I would even like it until I saw it used in some music videos:

Mike Sloat has some really nice videos (not my musical preferences) but the vignetting gives it a strange, surreal feel of sorts. I think he uses the Canon XL2 on most of his stuff...lets see what the HV20 comes up with!

Thanks for those!
I'll experiment on a upcoming project, and see if it's something that will work.

Mal,

Let me know how it worked for you. I actually made it while at work the other day before I tested it. I went home and tried it and I actually liked it better than the actual plug in I was using. I may include it on my current project as well!

I'm not sure how big of a difference it would make on your footage, but I might suggest setting that layer's blending mode to "multiply", it's a big more similar to the way light and shadows work.

don't forget vignetting means also blurry, not only dark corners.

The effect that is used often in productions, especially UK productions it seems, limits it to darken only; I can't recall seeing any blurring being applied, ever.

It's certainly a trend, and probably won't last, but it's neat to have it available thanks to tkmslee.

But yeah, "vignetting" would involve blurring too, I agree.
