Hi,

I have been following this forum with great interest. I currently own a old Sony TR-PC5. I have used it for several years now. I mainly shoot and then Edit in Premere Elements. After that I export it to Tape (for backup) and burn a DVD. Now the build quality an reliability of the Sony is excellent, I have used it for about 7 years and it is still in good condition.

Now I was interested in the HV-30 as a replacement because HDV is easy to edit. I own a AMD quad core with 2 Gig memory and Vista Ultimate with premere Elements 4.0. Altough my system should be good for AVCHD editing, the lack of native support by Adobe was a major drawback to me.

Now I have read the HF10/100 reviews. A few days ago I held both the HV-30 and HF-100 in hand. I really liked the HF-100's lightness and also the front mounted mic's. The top mounted mic was a major problem with the Sony as well, because it would pick up all sorts of sound from other angles.

So because of the size, weight and solid state memory I am really tempted to go for the HF-100. The remaining problem is AVCHD editing.

Now I have been experimenting with VoltaicHD to convert AVCHD to premiere and as an intermidiate solution it is actually workable. At least untill Adobe descides to integrate AVCHD into Premiere.

I am however puzzled by the memory card requirements of the HF-100. It needs at least Class4. The Sandisk Ultra II is class 4 at 9Mbps. However according to the manual the best selectable quality in the HF-100 is 1080x1920 at 17mbps.

So do I need the Extreme III or the Ultra II. The manual states class 4 will do (page 32).

oh btw why the HF100 and not the HF10?

The HF-100 is 200 Euro's cheaper and an 8 Gb Ultra II costs 40 Euro's and takes about 1 hour of filming. I have never been able to fill a 60min DV tape on one holiday so 1 hour should be enough.

9 Mbps equals 72 mbps

Class 4 Card: A speed of 4 MB/s or higher
(4 MB equals 32 mb)

I use the Transcend 8GB Class 6, which is both cheap and working. No issues here in full AVCHD (1920x1080).

I curently use an older Ultra II 2Gig from my photocamera. I works perfectly. I ordered an 8Gig card for my camera wich will store 1 hour of video in the best quality.

I'm using the Patriot Class 6 16gb in my HF10 and it works great.

hf100 over hf10, why? because first is it cheaper and in the future sd cards will get cheaper and a 16gb wouldnt be worth 200 dollars. i think right now you can pick up a pana 16gb for $150. then, we look at it being removable which means easier way to get your footage out. also, what if your built in mem card somehow messes up.
