Hi All,
well, I splashed out and spent my gadget money for the net ten years, bought a HV20 AND a Nikon D40 in the same day :hv20-smilie71: (I need a drink after spending all that!!) ... anyway! ... I have Movie-maker on my XP machine ... when I try to "download" from the camera, it will only recognise the camera and download if I have recorded in SD mode .... is it the case that to download my HiDef recordings I will need something like Sony Vegas Platinum?
thanks! ... looking forward to having some fun on hols :hv20-smilie03:
Allen.

Sony Vegas (and its Movie Studio variant) is a good choice. YOu can download a 30 day trial from the Sony Creative website (http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com).
I use Vegas 7 myself and love it - its format agnostic (if you have the codec, the video can be edited) and does not require high spec graphics cards to run fluidly.
But do check out the competition.

Ok - Is there a particular place I need to go to get the particular codec required?
do check out the competition
Absolutly - it seems that some complain about the "complexity" of Vegas ... this doesn't trouble me to much as I'm used to such things ... will download it now and try later!
thanks,
/A.

If you just want to transfer the data from the tape, a free program like HDVSplit will do the job.
http://strony.aster.pl/paviko/hdvsplit.htm
The result will be a generic MPEG2 transport stream, like from a DVB-card. Many editors can read that by now, but not the Windows Movie Maker.

If you're going to go with Vegas (I absolutely love it, been using it for almost 2 years for various projects), use Vegas' built in capture tool to get the MPEG2 streams from the tape.
I've heard that using HDVSplit to get the files, and editing them in Vegas, will result in a crash because of some black frames it adds to the end of the clip.
Codecs are installed somewhere in your Windows OS...not sure where but most good programs (Vegas included) will list all available codecs if you're selecting options in the Render dialouge. Altho make sure you restart the program after you install codecs, otherwies they won't show up.
Vegas really isn't that complex...I tried some of Adobe's programs and was baffled. :P You can put effects on clips..pan/crop...change settings, really intuitive I think!
(Hope that helped)

I am using Premiere Pro 2.0 which works great. Other people also reported Premiere Element is a great tool too.

I have used HVSplit to ofload my first few videos. Don't have an editor that works yet.
Since I used HVSplit does that mean I can't edit with Vegas?
Any other options on editing software?
My Elements V2 and Ulead V7 doesn't work either

Try to rename the m2t file to .mpg. You might be able to load them to your NLE

I can't seem to rename the file type.
This is strange as I thought this was something that could be done.
Am I having brain fade?

Are you viewing the file as xxxxxx.m2t ?
What error message you got when you try to rename the file extension?

Win Xp is not like earlier versions. I can rename the file but the extension doesn't change.
Tried to even follow the MS "Help" instructions but whoever writes that stuff doesn't seem to use Windows :-).
GOOD NEWS
Googled file convert and found a program that will convert m2t > mpg files that I can open based on my initial tests.
Thanks for your reply.

As far as I know, XP is still like earlier version of windows. You can change file extension by click on the file and hit the F2 key.
Are you sure you are not having file extension hidden? Try in Windows Explorer, Tools menu, Folder Options, under the View tab, see if you have "Hide extension for known file types" checked.

Try what Taky said...I always have file extensions shown and I was able to rename and play all my .m2ts to .mpgs in WMP, VLC, Vegas, etc, with no problems.

You might want to post your question to the Mac Editing section of the Forum if you need specific Mac help.

well anyway, what i want is done by a program called virtualdvhs, it's part of the apple firewire sdk that can be downloaded for free on apple's website
