Hello all again! I have a quick question if anyone can answer this for me. I own a Canon HV20 camcorder and am a serious user of Sony Vegas. Just recently I found out about previewing video in Vegas using an external monitor through firewire. To do so though, you need something to convert the firewire to your standard RCA cable signals. There are two ways to do so: buy an expensive adaptor (I've seen them no lower than $150) or to route it through your camcorder. Everyone says if your camera has firewire and an A/V interface you can go from the digital firewire to the analog A/V and hook that up to the external screen. I know the HV20 does analog to digital conversion, but is it possible to go the other way around? Thanks!

HV20/30 already equipt with RCA output. You don't need to convert FW signal. Just plugin the RCA cord from the camera to your preview monitor.

^No, no, I want to preview what I am editing in Sony Vegas on an external screen. To do so I have to go from firewire to RCA A/V cables.

I know the HV20 does analog to digital conversion, but is it possible to go the other way around? Thanks!Yes. The HV20 has IEEE-1394 input. The signal flow is Vegas directs the video out the Firewire, which goes into the converter (Your camcorder) which outputs the video through your AV cables, to your monitor.
You just have to figure out what if any settings are required with the HV20.
I got it to work a few years ago with a Digital8 camcorder and and I think Vegas 5.
Good luck, it seems a lot of people have a difficult time doing it.

I do it with FCP, its pretty easy, only took me 5 minutes to set up, and 25 minutes to trouble shoot.

^^Hey, thanks, at least now I know it works somehow with the camera.
^Do you know what settings you had to use on the camera by any chance?

Hmm, just make sure the camera is in playback mode, and set to tv out. I dont use my HV20 for this function anymore, i just use a cheapo jvc cam, but the HV20 definantly does this function ,because thats how i originally had it setup.

^Alright, let me play with the camera now and see if I can get it to work.
EDIT: Alright, I just got it to work! You have to make sure the camera is set to "DV" mode not "HDV" or it won't work. You also must make sure the "A/V -> DV" function is off and you are all set. Thanks for the help everyone!
